The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles is one of those places that’s likely off the radar for many tourists.
Unless you're a real book nerd, this is the sort of sight you visit when you've already seen L.A.'s highlights. Actually, I AM a major book geek and still, I only visited on about my fifth visit to L.A.!
Now, having been to the self-billed "largest new and used book and record store in California," I have to say: You should absolutely move this up on your itinerary.
When you're done exploring the many nooks and crannies here, head over a block to the
Grand Central Market for lunch; it's a great way to spend a morning.
Here's a look in at
The Last Bookstore in photos:

The exterior of the bookstore. The building is in the city's old bank district, and I believe it once housed a bank. |
It has a record section ... |
... with top picks from staff. How awesome is that! |
There are lots of little areas where you can sit and discuss your favourite books. |
Here's one of the rooms, that I think must have been a safe in its former life. |
Head up the stairs, and you'll see lots of cool stuff including ... |
... this fantastic book installation.
You'll also find artists and artisans of every kind ... |
... and a variety of art to peruse and buy. |
And, of course, there are a lot of books, in some really unique bookcases. |
Make sure you get a photo taken in the book tunnel! |
