Plan your trip to Antelope Canyon: 6 things to know

Antelope Canyon: Things to know as you plan your trip

Have you ever been to a slot canyon? I visited Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona recently and it felt truly otherworldly.

If you’re planning a visit, here are 6 things to know:

1. Antelope Canyon is on Navajo land and all visits must be booked through one of seven tour companies. You can book at navajonationparks.org. Antelope Canyon is about a 10-minute drive from Page, Arizona.

2. You can choose a tour for Upper Antelope or Lower Antelope. Upper has deeper canyon walls and is an easier walk than Lower, which has lots of stairs. I did the Upper tour and the actual walk through the canyon was about .25 of a mile. Visitors must hike up and then down a walkway upon exiting the canyon; this is an additional distance of about .75 of a mile.

3. We were transported three miles to the canyon via a truck; we sat in the open but covered truck cab. Our guide was awesome and showed us how to take the best photos and also took a lot of them for us! I think he cleaned up in tips when the tour was over; I hope he did!

You'll be tranported to the canyon in one of these trucks that seats 12-14.

4. There are only four time slots daily available for the tours, which last 90 minues each. The best time is between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun shines overhead down into the canyon, and these timeslots cost more and sell out first.

The incredible canyon walls are the result of wind and water erosion.

5. No bags or even belt bags are allowed. So wear clothing with pockets if you need to bring more than your phone and water bottle. This rule is in place because when bags were allowed, people would use pens or other sharp objects and sometimes even mascara (!) to etch their initials on the walls. UGH, some people!

6. Antelope Canyon is a 15-minute drive from Page, Arizona, and the equally famous Horseshoe Bend is about a 10-minute drive from Page in a slightly different direction. So it’s easy to see both of these social media darlings in one morning.
